LIPSTICKS AND GLOSS

LIPSTICK AND LIP-GLOSS

I always felt that putting on a little bit of a bright red lipstick gave me a little boost for the day, made me feel a little more confident.

Now I feel really disappointed in finding out just what I have been applying to my lips all these years. What really makes me angry, is the fact that these dangerous additives in our products, especially lipstick, which I have to admit to licking my lips through the day , so in fact eating the stuff! Has been doing to our bodies, with the facts being known to these cosmetics companies.

There is interesting article, with a list to LIPSTICKS and the harmful ingredients found in them on the –THE READER’S DIGEST .

I had never realised that Lipstick could contain LEAD , I was actually very shocked.

I had often wore a bright red lipstick which I loved , now to find the amounts of lead and the possibility that the red colour could also come from a beetle ( I am a vegetarian ) Yuk!

I have read the amount of lead could increase, depending on the colour and the brand.

Regardless how much you have paid for it! That really shocked me, you certainly don’t get what you pay for on that aspect.

Also lead is used to make a lipstick stay longer on the lips. So goodbye to those for me!

LIPSTICKS CAN CONTAIN

Lipsticks and Lip-gloss or salve can also contain other metals such as LEAD, CADMIUM , CHROMIUM, ALUMINIUM and MANGANESE . Also ARSENIC,  ZINC and MERCURY. Then MICA for a sparkle and IRON OXIDE for red and brown colours. Also synthetic flavourings, Fragrance. the list goes on! Where do you find out what is in your lipstick? as the container is so small.

This very well written article from FUTURE KING AND QUEEN.COM give the really interesting history, of when lipstick was first used, how they made it.

They bring the story up to date, explaining what is in our lipsticks now, and what to avoid.

ANIMAL PRODUCTS USED IN LIPSTICKS AND MAKEUP

Whilst learning about all this , I came across an article on ONE GREEN PLANET.ORG they go into all the animal derivatives found in Lipstick, Perfumes and makeup and creams in general. All I can say YUK YUK YUK !!!!

Everything to Pregnant Horse Urine, to crushed beetles and the liver of animals.

It doesn’t make that clear ,when you are buying your expensive creams and lipsticks!

SAFER LIPSTICKS

You still need to look at the list of ingredients, to see what balance that you are happy with.

This is a link to WELLNESS MAMA which has a base recipe for a lipstick , with ideas for adding colour.

This site also has a recipe for a LIP BALM  if you are not keen on colours.

MAKING THE LIP BALM FROM THE ABOVE RECIPE

I had a go at making the Lip Balm from the Wellness Mama site, it was really easy to do. My daughter absolutely loves it. I added some Peppermint for her as well. She goes through so many of these, she must truly eat them!

She saved up her old Lip Balm tubes, so I cleaned those thoroughly and when the Lip Balm was still liquid, I carefully poured it into the empty tube , which was much easier than I thought it was going to be.

Once it had cooled and set it was remarkably easy just to twist up as normal. What struck me too was just how little product is in these tubes. The cost of the one I had purchased her in an Organic shop was so expensive, that will be the first and last time I do that again. Homemade all the way!
